Health Risks at Public Swimming Pools that You May Not Be Aware Of
Swimming Pools
Public swimming pools are a great option for those who don’t have the luxury of a personal pool, however it’s important to be aware of certain health risks that exist before bringing the family. Be sure to pay attention to the pool’s cleanliness, and don’t be afraid to speak with the pool manager if you feel something in the pool area needs a little attention.
- Asthma Swimming in a pool with a high level of chlorine can trigger asthma attacks. Since public pools often use a lot of chlorine due to a high bather load, it’s important to be aware of this factor. Be an advocate for your child’s health – talk to management about the pool’s ventilation system or swim during a time when the pool isn’t as busy.
-
Athlete’s Foot Athlete’s foot is very contagious, and is very common in public areas. Public showers, locker rooms and swimming pools are three places where you’re most likely to get the fungus. To help prevent its transmission, wear sandals or flip flops when walking around the pool area, in the changing rooms or while in the shower.
-
Cryptosporidium, also known as Recreational Water Illness, is a waterborne disease caused by contaminated pool or hot tub water due to fecal matter. Even in pools that are properly chlorinated, the cryptosporidium germ can survive for days. In order to prevent contamination and infection, do not go to the bathroom in the water, do not swallow the water and keep dirty diapers away from the swimming area.
-
Swimmer’s Ear Swimmer’s ear occurs when water stays in the ear canal for long periods of time, creating the perfect environment for germs to grow. Germs found in the pool and at other recreational water facilities are one of the most common causes of swimmer’s ear. While this cannot be spread from one person to another, it’s important to dry your ears thoroughly after swimming.
While you may not be able to fully avoid these health risks while at a public pool, if you swim safely, monitor the amount of time you spend in the water and are aware of the pool’s routine maintenance schedule, you can greatly lower your chances of having to deal with any of these risks.
