Safety Tips to Protect Yourself from the UV Rays
Outdoor Living
It’s Summer time! It’s definitely time for picnics, outdoor barbecues, pool parties and endless backyard games. Most people just enjoy the summer sun and the fun it brings. However, being in the sun can bring harm to your skin. Fret not, you can protect yourself! Avoid the harmful UV rays and stay safe in the sun with these cool tips.
Sunscreen
Sunscreen is considered to be the ultimate protection against the harmful ultraviolet or UV rays of the sun. The UV radiation can damage skin cells and DNA. UV rays are known to be the main cause of wrinkles and skin cancers. Hence, it is important to protect your skin from extreme exposure to this radiation.
Find sunscreens with SPF 15 or higher. Generally, SPF 15 can do basic protection. How does it work? If the unprotected skin turns red in less than 20 minutes, with an SPF 15 sunscreen, your skin is protected and will prevent reddening longer than the average – about 15 times more.
Sunglasses
The next thing you need to protect are your eyes. Do not just buy sunglasses just for the sake of fashion. Sunglasses with UV protection are very important. Longer exposure to the sun would mean UV radiation penetrating not just your eyelids but the other parts of your eyes as well, including cornea and lenses. It’s best to choose sunglasses that can block up to 99% of UV rays.
Stay indoors at peak hours
Peak hours would mean those hours when UV rays are at its strongest. It is best to stay indoors and avoid overexposure to the sun between 10 am and 4 pm. This is especially helpful for those who love to stay in the sun and get their tan.
Protective clothing
If you need to be out in the sun, it is important that you wear protective clothing to at least minimize the penetration of UV rays to your skin. Try to find clothes that have UV protection on their labels. Keep in mind many traditional clothes worn do not protect your skin. If UV rays can penetrate despite the number of layers, it will still damage your skin.
Know when enough is enough
If you are in need of Vitamin D, then sunshine is probably the best source. However, overexposure can bring more harm than good, so it is best to know when enough is enough. Exposure to the sun for 15 minutes can already guarantee a good dose of vitamin D without getting sunburned or getting too much UV rays.
